Surgical Services Q & A

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Dr. Kennedy uses minimally invasive surgery to correct problems in your reproductive organs. Minimally invasive surgery is an alternative to complex surgical procedures of the past.

These conventional, open surgical procedures required large incisions and resulted in a long recovery, blood loss, and a high risk of complications. With minimally invasive surgical techniques, surgery is performed with small tools that lead to smaller incisions and faster recovery times without sacrificing quality surgical outcomes. Laparoscopic surgery is an example of minimally invasive surgery. This procedure uses a small tube equipped with a lighted camera to give Dr. Kennedy a clear image of the area to be treated.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery usually leads to a faster recovery than conventional surgery. Incisions are smaller, so you experience very little blood loss and scarring. You have less pain and risk of complications than you might with conventional surgery, too. The procedures can be performed in-office rather than at a separate surgical site. You don’t have to worry about a long hospital stay and the expenses and inconvenience involved.

What minimally invasive surgical procedures are possible?

Dr. Kennedy offers a number of in-office minimally invasive surgical procedures, including:

  • Endometrial ablation (no incisions necessary)
  • Hysteroscopy

  • Endometrial or cervical biopsy

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy (sometimes necessary at a surgical site)

An in-office procedure saves you time and ensures your comfort. You’re supported by a compassionate staff during the entire pre- and postsurgical procedure. In cases of hysterectomy or fibroid/cyst removal, you may need a minimally invasive surgery performed at a surgical site.

What is laparoscopy?

A laparoscopic procedure uses a slim surgical tool called a laparoscope. This tool is fitted with a light and telescope.

The laparoscope sends real-time imaging of your internal organs and tissues to a monitor. Your surgeon is able to “see” the surgical site on a screen and can perform procedures using special miniaturized instruments.

Laparoscopy is also a powerful diagnostic tool and can provide visual confirmation of uterine fibroids or endometriosis.

If you have a gynecological problem that may require surgical intervention, an in-office surgical service may be appropriate. To learn more about minimally invasive surgical techniques offered by Dr. Kennedy, schedule an appointment online or over the phone.
